The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.

~Albert Einstein

Villains

All stories have some sort of evil person/villain. What are some qualities of these people and do any of them have good intentions?

Act V Journal

Act V, Scene I

My wife, Lady Macbeth, has been experiencing terrible sleepwalking spells that have me worried that we soon will be found out. I have found her a decent doctor in the hopes that he can cure her before she lets something too important slip and expose our foul deeds. I haven't the time to see her for myself but is most urgent that she be cured immediately.

Act V, Scene II

I am now most certain that I do not have the supporters I once had. I have noticed that I am receiving the most peculiar looks from people who used to be my trusted allies. These people are no longer with me and are probably planning my downfall. But I know that I cannot be beaten, it is impossible. These cursed people can try as hard as they like, but will not succeed.

Act V, Scene III

I have received news that the wretched English army is coming for me. But I am still quite certain that I have nothing to worry about. I know that I cannot die but I still am wearing all my armor for my army's sake. They need to get the impression that I am not in danger but am still prepared for a battle that I most likely will participate in. As for Lady Macbeth, I have been informed that she must cure herself which I think impossible, but I have much more important things to think about now, like getting rid of this pesky English army once and for all.

Act V, Scene IV

This English army that is supposedly coming has not yet arrived. Either the reports I was given were false or this army has realized that they cannot win. They probably have some scheme to try to fool me in some sort of way, but me being the great Macbeth has never been gullible and never will be....

Act V, Scene V

Today I heard someone cry out and it got me thinking of how fearless I've been lately. There used to be a time in my life where something like a shout in the dark woods would have frightened me, but not anymore. I guess there are some things that a man with power grows out of. The cry was cause by the death of my queen, which didn't even phase me. She was bound to die sometime, might as well be now. Then I had been told a ridiculous story of the woods moving. Even though I refused such a story to be true, I had my men prepare for the battle to come.

Act V, Scene VI

More and more of my soldiers have fled and joined the English army, but I know even without these cowardly men, me and my fortress can handle what is coming for me. I know that they are getting closer and I am ready for anything that they're going to throw at me.

Act V, Scene VII

They are finally here and offending me. I had to kill one who did not even know my name. Imagine someone not knowing my name! Of course he was women born and no match for me. I am not scared of anyone in my way for they have all been born by women and are not worthy to kill me.

Act V, Scene VIII

Well, it turns out that someone has been worth enough to kill me. That devil Macduff was not born by women and has slain me. I could have killed him easily in the beginning but opted not to, which turns out to be a grave mistake. I gave him his life and now he has took mine. I am now in a place where I cannot be poisened by power, perhaps this will be a better place for me...

Act IV Journal

Act IV, Scene I

In my confusion, I decided to meet with the three witches once more to receive knowledge about my future. They may be evil, but then again what am i? The hags let me know that it will non be man that hurts me, which worries me so. The witches showed me the image of a Banquo which smiled upon me. I am so filled with guilt I can bear it no more......

Act IV, Scene II

I may have finally caught a break. It seems as so Macduff has fled Scotland leaving his precious wife and child behind. It is an opportunity for me to rid them from this earth. When they die, they will bring Macduffs emotions down with them, making him powerless over me and out of my way.

Act IV, Scene III

Macduff should be informed of his losses anytime now, now that Ross is playing messenger. I fear that certain people are starting to catch on that I have been linked to all the recent murders. As far as I can tell, they don't have much proof but I cannot be sure. I have the worst feeling that the son of Duncan, Malcolm might know something, even though he was quick to flee, I have the worst feeling....

That would make good of bad and friends of foes!"

Definition of good and evil

By definition good is "morally excellent; virtuous; righteous; pious." Evil is defined as "morally wrong or bad; immoral; wicked." But it is not always easy to decipher between the two. What is your definition of good and evil and how can you tell the difference when it is not so clear? Also, who is good and evil in Macbeth...is anyone both?
